Air Quality & Wildfire Season Safety

Wildfires in Alberta are the main contributor to poor air quality. During the peak wildfire season (March 1 - Oct. 31), air quality can quickly deteriorate as smoke blows in and out of the city.

Air quality is currently acceptable in our city but may change as wildfires continue to spread throughout the province.

As a reminder, when the Calgary, Alberta - Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) - Environment Canada reaches 7 or above, schools may be asked to:

  • consider postponing or cancelling outside activities during lunch and recess, including fire drills;
  • contemplate methods for reducing the risk during outside activities such as field trips or extra-curricular activities by limiting the level of physical exertion and providing people with reasonable refuge from the smoke;

Communication of measures to parents/guardians taken in response to poor AQHI will be posted on the CBE website as well as all individual school websites. This information will be updated as the situation evolves.
